Using AI to Boost Your Job Search

by | Sep 16, 2025

Most of us have now experimented with AI. Whether it’s drafting an email, generating ideas, or summarising information. But did you know AI can also be a powerful tool in your job search. More job seekers are using AI tools like ChatGPT to polish their resume, improve cover letters, and even prepare for interviews.

The key, however, is balance. AI can help you streamline the application process and highlight your strengths, but it shouldn’t replace your voice.

Recruiters and hiring managers still want to get a sense of you, not a generic, robot-sounding candidate.

With that in mind, here are five practical ways to use AI to boost your job search, while still keeping things authentic.

The Job Advert

Copy and paste the job advert into an AI tool like ChatGPT.

Ask: “What are the top 5 skills required for this job”

Ensure page one of your resume includes these skills.

Recruiters spend around 12 seconds scanning a resume, make sure they quickly see its relevance to the advert.

Your Resume

Once you have updated your resume. Attach the job advert and attach your resume into an AI tool like ChatGPT.

Ask: “How does my resume compare for this job advert”

The AI will highlight any gaps or opportunities for improvement.

Use this feedback to strengthen your resume so it’s more closely aligned with the role.

Remember, don’t just copy and paste AI’s suggestions, adapt them so they reflect your genuine experience and style.

Strengthen Your Achievements with STAR

Your achievements make your resume stand out, but many job seekers struggle to phrase them clearly. AI can help by rewriting your achievements using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

Paste your existing achievements or responsibilities into ChatGPT.

Ask: “Reframe these achievements using the STAR framework?”

This gives you a structured, results-focused way of presenting your contributions.

You can then adapt the suggestions into your resume in your own voice.

Cover Letter

Cover letters should be short, specific, and tailored. Aim for half a page that directly connects your skills and experience to the job advert.

Once you have written your draft, paste it into ChatGPT.

Ask: “How can I improve this cover letter?”

The AI can help tighten the language, cut unnecessary detail, and ensure you are addressing the employer’s priorities.

But remember, make sure the final cover letter still sounds like you.

Interview Questions

When you’re invited to interview, use AI to prepare.

Copy the position description into ChatGPT

Ask:What are 8 behavioural-based interview questions based on this position description?”

You can then take it a step further.

Ask: “Generate sample answers to these questions based on my resume and this PD.”

These responses then give you a framework to practice with, so you feel more confident and prepared on the day.

Finally

Remember, AI is a fantastic tool to make your job search faster and sharper, but it should never replace you. Always read over the suggestions and ask yourself:

  1. Does this sound like me?
  2. Would I write or say this?

If the answer is no, change it until it feels authentic. Your personality, voice, and unique perspective are what will ultimately land you the role.

Use AI to enhance, not erase them.
